2012 OPSEU Human Rights Conference

“Social Change through Social Media,” the 2nd Biennial Human Rights Conference was held from November 16-18, 2012 at the Sheraton Parkway Toronto North in Richmond Hill.  The conference welcomed over 150 OPSEU members – many of whom were new activists – from across the province.  It was the most diverse of its kind – ever!

Participants were involved in a variety of different activities that included: panel discussions, plenaries, workshops and hands-on use of social media applications.  The objective throughout was to integrate human rights advocacy with social media strategies.  The conference also welcomed a series of innovative speakers: Sonia Verma (Canadian journalist who covers foreign affairs for the Globe and Mail), Derek Blackadder (CUPE National representative and senior Canadian correspondent for Our Times and LabourStart.org) and Min Reyes (established Canadian blogger and social media proponent), to name a few.  These individuals lent their  human rights and labour expertise while discussing effective ways  to create compelling social media messages, calls to action, strategies and tactics for human rights advocacy.
