Please treat workers at Elizabeth Fry Toronto with respect during conciliation

Elizabeth Fry Toronto is an organization committed to justice. As the Executive Director, I am asking that you show this commitment to your own employees.
Elizabeth Fry Toronto’s revenues and programming have increased more than 20% since 2007. This is a great success, for which Elizabeth Fry Toronto Management should be applauded. In spite of this success there has been no increase to the number of permanent positions. Contract and casual positions mean lack of continuity in those who deliver programs, a lack of stability for the workers affecting their well-being and mental health and an erosion of the programming so important to the clients who depend on these services.
60% of Elizabeth Fry Toronto staff are contract or casual, and these workers are the very ones Elizabeth Fry Management is attempting to attack in this round of negotiations. It is unjust to ask these workers to accept an erosion of their minimal rights.
Contingent work is no way to build success – it is called exploitation. Permanent positions must be created to give contingent workers a share in the Agency’s success. Those workers who remain on the casual rolls must be given regular and fair access to shifts on a rotational cycle based on Management’s own seniority list.
Please ensure that Elizabeth Fry Toronto comes to conciliation on September 14, 2012 with a mandate to settle negotiations with a fair and reasonable deal for their workers.
