The 2011 Provincial Discussion Table Consensus Agreement included a commitment to establish a Worker Safety Group to advise and report on systemic matters relating to the occupational health and safety of child welfare sector workers in Ontario. The “Worker Safety Subcommittee” is composed of representatives from OPSEU, CUPE, Simcoe CAS Employee Association, and the Children’s Aid Societies of Ontario Employers’ Group. Also attending is the (Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies) OACAS, and UNIFOR should they appoint a representative.

The first work of the committee is a project funded by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, carried out by a consultant to conduct research of sector specific tools and training that may support workers in the sector.

This exciting project will:

  • Determine best practices to worker safety in child welfare and other social services, and across jurisdictions;
  • Conduct a current state assessment of approaches to worker safety in the child welfare sector;
  • Develop a recommended strategy to inform the development of a standard set of policies, procedures, protocols, and supports to improve worker safety across the sector; and
  • Consider opportunities for a shared service approach to worker safety

We are delighted to launch this website to keep CAS members within OPSEU apprised and involved in the project and in other initiatives of the Worker Safety Subcommittee.
