The Regional Bariatric Care Centre (RBCC) at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is a Bariatric Centre of Excellence, one of several such centres across Ontario. The RBCC provides services for the treatment of obesity and obesity related health conditions, safe weight management, and healthy lifestyle changes. The RBCC provides surgical services for those choosing bariatric surgery, including pre operative, peri operative, and post operative care (both assessment and intervention).

The focus of this 26‑week program is to help patients achieve medically acceptable weight loss in order to improve their co morbidities and quality of life. All RBCC services are provided on a referral basis.
The Psychologist/Psychological Associate has a direct reporting relationship to the Manager, Diabetes Care and Bariatric Medicine Programs and matrix reporting relationship for psychology practice to the Director, Health Professions and Collaborative Practice. The Psychologist/Psychological Associate will be responsible for providing a full scope of psychological services for patients of the Regional Bariatric Care Centre. Job Description
The Technician III is responsible for performing pre-analytical functions such as specimen collection, handling, accessioning and processing; preparing reagents, chemicals, slides for use in testing and analysis. The Technician III performs tests that do not require independent judgement, i.e., automated urine dipsticks. The incumbent assists in maintaining equipment, temperature logs, inventory control, ordering/storing supplies, and other clerical functions. These duties will be undertaken in accordance with the technician’s level of training and the policies of Mount Sinai Hospital.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Accession specimens into the Lab Information System. Label specimens, containers, requisitions, tissue cassettes
- Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection according to established SOP
- Perform those tests or procedures not requiring independent judgement, i.e. automated urine dipsticks, weighing and
- aliquoting of 24 hour urines, DNA/RNA extractions
- Centrifuge, aliquot and distribute specimens to testing areas
- Operate and maintain selected equipment after training
- Load/unload blood, urine, tissues, slides, etc. onto/from automated equipment, tissue/slide processors, stainers, coverslippers, robotic handlers, etc. following instructions and abiding by established policies and procedures
- Clean and maintain equipment in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures; complete maintenance logsrequiring documentation
- Prepare 24 hour urine containers, formalin containers, organic solvents containers, cytolyte tubes, etc.
- Package referred out specimens/unpackage referred in specimens
- Stores/disposes specimens according to established SOP’s
- Safely dispose of chemical and biomedical wastes, sharps containers, etc.
- Adhere to all safety practices when handling specimens and chemicals
- Assist in inventory control, ordering supplies, rotate supplies with short expiry to minimize wastage
- Pick up/deliver specimens as required
- Perform tasks with a focus on accuracy and quality
- Document and report unusual incidents, pre-analytical errors, safety hazards, to appropriate person(s) and assist in identifying root cause(s) and implement corrective action(s).
- Any clerical functions within the laboratory as required
- Participate in on-call off shifts as required
Job Requirements
- Graduate from a recognized community college for Medical Lab Technician/Assistant or equivalent
- Certification as Medical Laboratory Assistant (OSMT) or equivalent
- 2 years relevant experience within the last 5 years is preferred
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and Lab Information System (LIS)
- Demonstrate ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively in a team environment
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, multi task, and meet expectations
- Good interpersonal skills and work habits
- Demonstrate satisfactory work performance and attendance record
- Other duties as assigned by Manager

Job Description
To perform Immunohematologic tests and duties accurately and reproducibly while exhibiting a working knowledge of the theory, methodology, and equipment required in order to aid in diagnosis and management of a patient.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Performs procedures related to reception, documentation and storage of specimens
- Performs procedures related to ABO grouping, Rh, antibody screening and cross matching blood
- Performs procedures related to prenatal testing, new-born testing and paternal phenotyping
- Performs antibody identification procedures
- Performs procedures related to receipt and storage of blood and blood components from the Canadian Blood Services
- Performs procedures related to release of prepared blood and blood components to the patient’s ward or other location for therapeutic use
- Writes basic interpretation of test results and releases these to the patient’s physician/ward in a timely fashion
- Maintains worksheets, logbooks, patient records, etc. as required by law and the policy of the laboratory
- Performs routine preventive maintenance of all equipment and is able to operate equipment effectively
- Maintains written records of all quality control, instruments checks etc.
- Prepares solutions and reagents applicable to the tests performed
- Exhibits ability to prioritize work and respond to urgent unpredictable demands for blood bank services in STAT situations. Consults with peers, senior technologists, section supervisor or section head when appropriate relative to abnormal results, panic results or other concerns
- Exhibits a co-operative attitude with other staff, congeniality, flexibility in hours of work, reliability and punctuality, ability to work at a variety of duties, and flexibility in learning new procedures. Follows the code of professional conducts of the CSMLS
- May assist with demonstrating procedures to new staff or students as requested
- May participate in educational and informational programs
- Communicates effectively with physicians, nurses and other hospital personnel – includes basic interpretation of laboratory test results and explanations of limitations of the test procedure
- May refer tests to other testing facilities for confirmation etc. after consultation with a senior technologist

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Graduate from a recognized accredited school of Ultrasound Technology
- Active member in good standing with the American Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) and/or active member in good standing of the Canadian Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers
Experience:
- One year experience demonstrating clinical competency in all aspects of ultrasound procedures
- Ultrasound experience in performing general, abdominal, obstetric, gynaecological, breast and paediatric examinations. Musculoskeletal and vascular experience would be an asset.

Comprehensive working knowledge of the theory, methodologies and procedures in Clinical Biochemistry to perform analytical testing with accuracy and precision; must demonstrate competency and accountability in decision and actions.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Perform procedures related to analytical testing of patient samples according to established policies and procedures either manually or on automated equipment
- Responsible and accountable for all results and procedures performed
- Exhibit good time management, multitask, monitor and prioritize workload in response to demands of urgent and STAT testing
- Communicate effectively all critical results to ordering physicians or units
- Perform internal and external quality control procedures, calibrations, linearity and other quality assurance procedures; perform basic troubleshooting when these procedures fail acceptable limits; report unresolved problems and seek guidance from Senior or Charge Technologist as needed
