OPSEU Local 5102 developmental services workers at Surex Community Services are holding a rally on December 21 as a strike deadline of 21:01 am, December 22, approaches.

What: Rally
When: December 21, 2011
Where: Surex Community Services, 311-40 Wynford Dr. Don Mills ON
Time: Noon – 1 p.m.

“Surex is prepared to use the holiday season to force an unfair deal on their workers.” Said OPSEU President, Warren (Smokey) Thomas. “Workers at Surex have the full support of their union as they get pushed to their strike deadline.”

Both sides are back at the table on Tuesday, December 20. “We are hoping that these last two days of negotiations go better than they did on December 1st. Last time we met, this employer was completely unwilling to discuss key items on the table,” said Robert Tracey, a member of the Local 5102 bargaining team.

“Most of the workers at Surex are part-time,” said Tracey. “Most of us do not have benefits, and none of us has a pension.”

If contract talks fail, Local 5102 will be facing a strike deadline of December 22, 2011 at 12:01 a.m.

Surex Community Services workers provide care, support and training to adults with developmental disabilities.
