Today, the solemn, weeklong observance of Passover, or Pesach, begins. This year, the celebration begins in the evening of March 27 and winds up on April 4.
Passover is a celebration commemorated in the Book of Exodus which tells the story of liberation from slavery of the Israelites in Egypt and their ultimate exodus to freedom.
The holiday is called Passover, in reference to the tenth plague in Egypt, whereby God passes over the houses of the Jews, saving their first-born sons. This holiday is crucial to the Jewish people’s understanding of themselves and their relationship with God.
Passover reminds us of the vital importance of liberty for true dignity and happiness. Liberty is the only way we’re truly able to reach our full potential as unique individuals and members of the community.
We wish a joyous and safe Passover: “chag Pesach kasher vesame’ach”!
